A Research study is being conducted by horticulturalists from Dartmouth and the University of Massachusetts on Gelsemium sempervirens, or Carolina Jessamine, plants in our neighborhood.

Gelsemium Sempervirems (Carolina Jessamine)

The effects of urbanization on plant-insect interactions
Rebecca Irwin (Dartmouth College)
Lynn Adler (UMass-Amherst)
Paige Warren (UMass-Amherst)

Urbanization has many impacts on both the distribution and abundance of native species. However, little is known about how urbanization influences natural selection on a native species. Our proposed study investigates the effects of suburbanization on natural selection on plant defense and floral traits in the native vine Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina Jessamine) through changes in plant-insect interactions. The Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina offers opportunities to study the interface of suburban and natural environments in its many parks, university-owned lands, and greenspaces which lie in close juxtaposition to suburban greenspace. Our proposed study quantifies differences in floral and arthropod fauna, pollinator assemblages, plant-insect interactions, and plant reproduction between suburban and forested sites, as well as identifies mechanisms by which urbanization may alter species interactions and natural selection on floral and defensive traits in Gelsemium sempervirens. Preliminary findings suggest that species interactions (including pollination, nectar robbing, and floral herbivory) are more common in suburban sites. We are continuing to quantify these changes in species interactions, and their consequences.

Neighborhood Improvements

The board has approved or is in the process of looking at continuous improvements to our neighborhood. Here is a list:
  • Grounds/Front Entrances – The entrance signs were raised and the lighting replaced to allow for a greater variety plants. Jones Landscaping is our current provider of landscaping services. Earlier this year, they put in some new annuals by each of the signs at the entrance and will be replacing plants as scheduled year round. They are also providing common area landscape maintenance throughout the neighborhood. Within the next couple of months, the board will be reviewing a new landscaping design for the “burm” area that fronts Buffaloe Road. This new design will be installed this fall.

  • Walking Trail – repairs are in progress to some of the more noticeable cracks and bumps caused by tree root growth along the walking trail. Please keep in mind that tree roots will continue to slowly invade the trail as well as the tennis court surface, so this is a long term issue that must be addressed every few years. We are fortunate to have such a plethora of wonderful natural vegetation in our neighborhood, but we do have to deal with the consequences on occasion.

  • Tennis Courts – the tennis courts will be resurfaced to repair the bumps and cracking cause by tree root growth. Work should start by the end of July.

  • Pond maintenance – the 3 storm ponds located in both sections of Lakemoor have begun receiving monthly maintenance to improve the look and health of the ponds and to meet Town of Garner regulations.

  • Swimming Pool – The pool house and the pump house were recently repainted. New pool lounge chairs were also recently added.

  • Playground area – You may have noticed a “No Trespassing” sign placed at the playground. Of course, the playground, pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and walking trail are open to ALL Lakemoor homeowners and their guests. This sign was placed to help local Authorities enforce neighborhood no trespassing regulations with respect to people being on the properties who don’t live in the Wynds or Mead of Lakemoor, or are their guests. Please keep in mind that all guests who visit these community properties must be accompanied by a homeowner.

  • Mailboxes – A big thank you to everyone who has brought their mailbox back into compliance with neighborhood standards.
